What stays fixed
In a North Indian layout, the house areas stay fixed and the rāśis change according to Lagna. In a South Indian layout, the rāśi cells stay fixed and the houses are counted from the Lagna sign. Switching the layout must never recalculate or alter the chart.
How to orient yourself
Find Lagna first. In the North layout, begin at the first-house diamond and continue anti-clockwise through the houses. In the South layout, locate the Lagna marker in its fixed sign cell, call that house one, and continue around the sign grid.
Why beginners get lost
Many charts show only sign numbers or abbreviations and expect the reader to know what is fixed. Astrolife labels both the sign and house, and uses the same two-letter graha abbreviations in every layout.
